Accepting New Clients in Person in Alpharetta, Georgia, and Online across Georgia

Helping adolescents, women, and couples address trauma and addiction so you can find your unique voice and achieve personal freedom and peace.

Do you feel helpless about your relationship? Is the repetitive cycle of arguing or distancing getting in the way of feeling understood? Do you feel like you and your partner are growing further apart despite wanting to be closer?

Using Emotionally Focused Therapy and Gottman principles, I can help you identify the source of the destructive patterns in your relationship so you and your partner will regain trust and joy.

What is Couples Therapy?

Whether you are dating, engaged, married, or contemplating divorce, couples therapy can help. Our relationships shape us, influence us, and deeply impact our well-being and sense of self. Life out in the world can be very cruel and challenging at times, but when coming home to your significant other, you want this to feel like your safe haven from the world. The bond with your partner might feel fragile at times, yet these are the bonds that keep us feeling safe and connected.

If your relationship is in crisis, couples therapy can restore trust and help you and your partner feel reconnected. An intimate relationship can be the source of both intense pain and profound joy. We naturally long to feel connected, yet we often end up feeling hurt, betrayed, or disillusioned. Couples in crisis often get caught in a pattern of arguing and distancing which creates the feeling that you are doomed to repeat the cycle over and over again. Despite wanting to be closer, your bond keeps feeling threatened and you are feeling further apart. Couples therapy can provide you and your partner with renewed hope and commitment for each other.

Is Couples Therapy Right For You and Your Partner?

Does any of this sound familiar? If you are dealing with any of these issues, couples therapy can help.

  • You and your partner can’t stop arguing
  • You are experiencing ongoing underlying tension in your relationship
  • You keep disagreeing about the level of involvement your family or your partner’s family has in your lives
  •  You don’t know how to work through unresolved issues together
  • You and your partner can’t get past a crisis of infidelity
  • You feel resentful about your partner’s level of responsibility in the home
  • You are worried about the loneliness and pain that you feel in your relationship
  • You have lost the spark of passion and joy in your partnership

Emotionally Focused Therapy For Couples

When working with couples, I use an approach called Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), intensely researched and designed by Dr. Sue Johnson through 25 years of study and practice with real couples navigating a wide range of challenges. Emotionally Focused Therapy is evidence-based since it draws on the new science discovered about adult love and bonding based on Attachment Theory. This research explains relationship distress in terms of our hard-wired, attachment-based need to feel safely and closely connected to our intimate partner in order to maintain our well-being. It is essential that both partners feel they can rely on each other in times of emotional need.

At times, this fundamental need for emotional connection can become threatened in a partnership. When this happens, we tend to respond in predictable self-destructive negative patterns, resulting in a downward spiral causing pain and damage to ourselves and the relationship as a whole. EFT offers couples in crisis a map for repairing the emotional bond you uniquely share. This map will help you feel more connected and cared for by your partner because you will be able to trust that they are there for you and effectively learn how to break destructive cycles. Instead, you will be able to work through conflicts in a more attuned and loving way.

What are the Benefits of Couples Therapy?
